Of Interest to Sidney Public Library Computer Users
Sidney Public Library is applying for E-rate funding to subsidize our high-speed internet costs which will soon be increasing due to the need for faster download speeds. In order to be eligible for E-rate funds, the library must comply with CIPA.
The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was enacted by Congress in 2000 to address concerns about children's access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet. CIPA imposes certain requirements on schools or libraries that receive discounts for Internet access or internal connections through the E-rate program – a program that makes certain communications services and products more affordable for eligible schools and libraries. In early 2001, the FCC issued rules implementing CIPA and provided updates to those rules in 2011.
In order to comply with CIPA, Sidney Public Library is required to have in place a technology protection measure (commonly known as a filter) that will block harmful content on the internet for minors.
The intent to shop for an install such technology will be discussed at the Sidney Public Library meeting of the Board of Trustees on May 8. The meeting begins at 5:30pm and the public is welcome to attend.
